Meditation
(9/6/2010): 23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time
Readings:
Wisdom 9:13-18
Psalm 90
Philemon 9-10, 12-17
Luke 14:25-33
Lord, as we move from summer into a time of greater activity, your message today is of special importance. The Book of Wisdom reminds us that, if we plan only in accordance with human thinking, our designs are likely to fail; that our reasoning is worthless unless you have given wisdom, and sent your Holy Spirit from on high.
We know from past experience that frequently our plans and ambitions end in failure and frustration, when we seek to do only our will, and neglect to ask for your guidance and help. Lord, through the grace of your Eucharist today, help me to open my mind and heart to the inspirations of your Holy Spirit. I place all my plans and activities into your hands. I desire to do my Father’s will, knowing that only then will I experience true peace, happiness and joy.
In the Gospel you call me to true discipleship. You tell me that following you must take precedence above all else in my life, that to be your disciple I must carry my cross and follow you. You carried your Cross in perfect obedience to the Father’s will. This is the cross you ask me to carry: that in all things I submit to the Father’s will, and strive to love and serve all around me in your perfect love.
Lord, without your aid I will fail. I come humbly before you today, seeking your help and guidance. Yet I come with complete faith and confidence in your never-failing love. Be with me throughout the rest of my time on earth, so that I may be your faithful disciple, and one day rejoice for all eternity in the glory of our Father’s Kingdom.
Turn, O Lord. Have compassion on your servants. Satisfy us with your steadfast love, so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Amen.
